Tips to Get Your Stuff Ready Before A Closet Remodel

Remodeling your home is a great way to change the way you live and can add value to your house. There are many reasons to do a remodel, but often only the “main” rooms end up getting done. The closet is often the most overlooked area of a house. Having a well-organized closet is important though, as it gives you more storage space and can help you keep track of what you have.

Getting a closet remodel can not only give you a fresh look but can help to add valuable space to your living area. Before you start a remodel though, there are steps you can take to make sure you get the full benefits of the work done.

Let’s take a look at 6 things you can do to get your stuff ready before your remodel.

Separate Your Clothes Based on Use

If you have a shirt that you haven’t worn in three months, it shouldn’t be in your closet, no matter how great you think it is.

There are, of course some items, such as special occasion dresses or suits that you will want to keep, but as a general rule of thumb, there’s no need to take up valuable space for something that you don’t use.

All The Extra Stuff in Your Closet Can Probably Be Thrown Away

There’s a good chance that you have items in your closet that aren’t clothes. Typically, people put things in there that they “might need later,” often to find that a year or more has passed without theirthinking about it.

If you find things that fit this category, you probably don’t need them.

Find A Local Goodwill or Other Charity To Donate To

This serves two purposes. For one, it will get rid of all the things that you’ve determined you don’t need.

Two, and more importantly, it will put your old items to good use. Charities rely on donations to bring in money or distribute to people in need. Don’t throw things away. Give them to charities that can get them to people who need them.

There is a chance you might even be able to get some tax credits for the items that you donate!

Give Yourself Enough Time To Get Everything Done Before Your Closet Remodel

A big problem people face when preparing for a closet remodel is that they wait until the day before it’s supposed to happen and then start preparing.

This leads to unnecessary stress, and often to keeping things you don’t need because you don’t have enough time to sort them out.

Give yourself a week and go through things slowly. Remember, getting a remodel accomplishes nothing if you are still going to over-stuff your closet with items you don’t use.

Know Exactly What You Are Getting

There’s no need for surprises. Make sure you communicate with the company doing your closet remodel so that both of you are on the same page.

By the time the remodel is finished, it should look like what you envisioned. Clarify anything that could be interpreted wrong beforehand, and make sure that you are specific.

Do A Little Spring Cleaning

Now that your closet is organized, make sure that you get rid of all the dust that has accumulated. Use this opportunity to vacuum, dust, and wipe off your shelves. Putting clean clothes into a dirty closet does no one any favors.
